Norbert A. Howell, AIA
Chief Technology Officer
Norbert A. Howell, AIA, serves as the Chief Technology Officer
for Advanced Solutions, Inc. A graduate of The Ohio State University
with a Bachelor of Science of Architecture, a Masters of Architecture,
and a graduate Certificate of Computer Aided Architectural Design
and Graphics (the equivalent to a Master of Computer Science),
Mr. Howell is a registered Architect; he practiced architecture
for 12 years and served as president of AEC CADCON, Inc. for 15
years before AEC CADCON and Advanced Solutions, Inc. merged.
As the President of AEC CADCON, Inc., Mr. Howell had many task and
responsibilities, including general business development and sales & marketing
of the company's products and services. One of Mr. Howell's
favorite tasks was teaching the various classes AEC CADCON, Inc.
offered. In this regard Mr. Howell brings many years of teaching
experience starting with his graduate studies at The Ohio State University
where his was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for two years teaching
computer aided design classes to undergraduate students. After graduate
school, Mr. Howell maintained the responsibility of teaching computer-aided
design to architects at the various architectural firms where he
worked. Mr. Howell has also served as a visiting lecturer at The
Ohio State University and as an Adjunct instructor at Columbus State
Community College where he taught various courses in architecture
including introductory and advanced CAD classes in both AutoCAD and
MicroStation.
Mr. Howell has combined his architectural and computer science knowledge
during his career. Using this unique combination of skills has allowed
Mr. Howell to apply the power of the computer to the practice of
architecture.
During his tenure at CRS (Caudill Rowlett Scott) of Houston – at
the time the fifth largest architectural engineering firm in the
world – he participated in the development of the Equipment
Inventory System for the United States Air Force. This system was
an extensive asset management system that tracked assets from their
purchase, through shipment, to installation in various Air Force
bases around the world.
Mr. Howell was also one of the lead developers for the Space Management
System used by the architectural programming staff at CRS. The SMS
was an architectural programming tool used for space programming
of small commercial offices to large multi-city developments. He
started his professional career in the very early eighties using
and managing an Autotrol system, then moved to the Intergraph IGDS
system and has been using PC based CAD systems, including AutoCAD
and MicroStation since they became available on PCs.
The concept of BIM (Building Information Modeling) is not a new
one to Mr. Howell; in fact, his college studies were based on that
concept and has worked with BIM throughout his career. Mr. Howell
has stayed abreast of the software applications that support the
BIM concept – TriForma, Architectural Desktop, Autodesk Building
Systems, and Revit. Because of his extensive background in CAD, BIM,
and the practice of architecture, Mr. Howell provides a wealth of
information to our clients and is often involved in providing one-on-one
technical guidance.
Mr. Howell is an active member of the American Institute of Architects,
AIA Ohio, and the Columbus chapter of the AIA.
